When to Use a Honing Rod
A sharper knife is a safer knife, which is why honing rods are so important and necessary in every kitchen! A dull knife blade can tempt us towards bad habits while cutting. Dull knives cause us to add hand pressure and unnecessary hand movements, which can cause fingers to be where we don’t want them to be! It is imperative that we keep our blades sharp.
So how do we go about doing that?
One thing that you should know that there is a difference between honing your knife blade and sharpening it.
Honing Rods vs. Knife Sharpeners
What many people refer to as a knife sharpening rod is actually a honing steel. Learn what the difference is!
- Knife sharpeners work by removing metal from your knife blade to literally sharpen the blade. This removes a large amount of metal during the sharpening process, making your knives less than perfect. Most home cooks shouldn’t sharpen their knives more than two or three times a year! Most often, what we consider needing to be sharpened is truly just needing to be honed!
- Honing rods realign the knife edge, rather than shaving off metal. They remove the dullness from your blade without removing too much of the blade itself. Using our knives creates microscopic folds, which can give the effect of a dull blade. The misalignment of the knife’s edge is not in need of sharpening, but it’s in need of honing! Honing can make your knife seem sharper and many chefs will hone their blades before each use of their knife.
